- Step 1
Preheat the broiler. Peel the potatoes and cut into large chunks. - Step 2
Bring a pot of water to a boil. Add salt and the potatoes and cook for 15 minutes. - Step 3
Meanwhile, peel and chop the onion. - Step 4
Melt the butter in a hot pan, then add the onion and sauté for 3 minutes over medium heat. - Step 5
Add the ground beef, season with salt and pepper and brown for 5 minutes, stirring. Set aside. - Step 6
When the potatoes are done, drain them and season with salt and pepper. (Optional: Add a pinch or two of ground nutmeg.) - Step 7
Mash the potatoes and add the butter and milk. - Step 8
Grease a baking dish with butter. Transfer the ground beef to the dish, then spread the mashed potatoes evenly on top. - Step 9
Sprinkle with grated cheese and place under the broiler for 10 minutes. That's it!
